WHAT IS EGYPTIAN ORIENTAL DANCE?

The "dance" phenomenon has always been a reflection of society. When we talk about oriental dance, or belly dance, we are referring to the dance of a country, and in this case the country is Egypt. I like to call it Egyptian Dance and I love to call it a dance that is halfway between folklore and individual creation, precisely because it comes from a people, with its aesthetic sense and its ways, and develops by incorporating new elements, also from western culture. The reasons why Egyptian dance has spread so much here, in the West, are certainly many, but what unites most of the people who choose it is the intimate contact with their feminine. Femininity, sensuality are characteristic traits of this dance since the whole society from which it originates is very expressive in this sense. As much as we Westerners consider ourselves "evolved", the word sensuality always creates a sort of conflict, .. here: perhaps many people want to truly reconcile with this and feel free to express themselves. Body language then has a wonderful way of "reaching" the viewer: it is impermanent, it changes continuously, there is music .. It is as if it were going to touch the irrational part of both those who dance and those who watch. I believe that dance is wonderful for this very reason: the Egyptian dance is particularly sublime because it expresses the feminine at 360º. If on the one hand it has a defined basic structure that remains constant, on the other, the Egyptian dance has an important component of improvisation; exactly as in the structure of Arabic music. And this increases even more the pleasure given by this dance, wide expressive freedom and an extraordinary balance between rule and freedom. If I think about the work that I personally try to develop with the girls who follow my courses, it is exactly this: to bring them, through a precise method, to freedom of expression. Obviously there are some necessary steps: the technique, the knowledge of music .. but the aim for me is to ensure that each one expresses its potential in an authentic way. If this happens then the person experiences some sort of transformation. And this is not only important in the room, but it is important in life.
